Long skirts

Lately I’ve been feeling very self conscious about my body. Don’t get me wrong, I know I don’t look bad, I’m healthy and have a nicely shaped body. But I have lacked the strength, stamina and willpower to work out regularly, so all those nicely shaped muscles that I used to proudly display five years ago are now droopy masses of flabby meat, covered in dimples and loose skin… not a pretty picture to look at, particularly compared to what my athletic self used to be like and what had become my own personal baseline and standard of physique. For me it is not about looking thin or fat, it is about looking strong, flexible, athletic, able to achieve magnificent things with your body.

With age I have also finally figured out what my style really is and I’m all about classic, timeless, feminine minimalist comfort… with high heels… just because at 5’3″ I can ALWAYS reach up for the sun better in high heels…

And with that enter center stage the long skirt. Completely timeless, minimalist, feminine, comfortable, providing appropriate coverage and highlighting thin frames nicely… it has it all! And it is also age appropriate!

I bought a couple of years ago a cool black parachute long skirt that works beautifully combined with a fitted blazer and high heel booties. Perfect for that cool minimalist style I’m so fond of

Since then I have greatly expanded my long skirt collection adding some interestingly cut taylored pieces to my wardrobe that keep me warm but cool looking during the cold months of winter…

Like this beautifully asymmetric long skirt in green army color by MM6 Madison Margiela

Which is super comfortable and extremely flattering with a fitted sweater or nice silk blouse…

Or the knitted skirts I got by Stefanel in EVERY SINGLE COLOR I could land my hands on…

Also perfect for the winter and very forgiving when combined with a nice loose delicate blouse to contrast the coziness of the knit…

Or this tailored midi skirt I got to wear on special nights out by Keepsake which looks beautiful combined with a dark tshirt:

The point is, I’m following the steps of a classic elegance icon like Carolina Herrera and I’m finding that the long skirt can be modern, elegant, classy and very very forgiving when you are going through a body-conscious stage and properly combined. You just have to be careful to pair it with the right tops in order to avoid looking too matronly, gypsy-like or formal… it can really become a basic wardrobe staple and make you feel perfectly put together even for the most casual event!
